چکیده

This paper presents PCSMA, an extension to the CSMA/CD protocol (used in the Ethernet) to support both conventional datagram tra c and real-time tra c. The protocol provides predictable packet-delivery bounds for real-time tra c. It does not require changes to existing Ethernet controllers for datagram tra c. Under the new protocol, periodic sources follow a variation of the CSMA protocol that requires them to reserve transmission slots before they can begin transmission. This protocol is intended particularly for use in the integrated network in a manufacturing shop. Periodic sources include multiple sensors generating disparate types and rates of data. We have carried out an extensive performance evaluation of the protocol using a simulation model. The results are impressive: PCSMA shows fewer collisions than CSMA, equivalent delays for conventional tra c, and no failures to meet deadlines for periodic tra c. This research was supported in part by the National Science Foundation Grant No. NCR-9111323 and by the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Automation of the University of Kentucky.

The Impact of CSMA/CD and Token Ring on System Performance and Stability of Integrated Wired and Wireless Networks

Computer networks can be built using either wired or wireless technology. Although wired network has been the traditional choice, wireless technologies are becoming more popular. The primary purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of a wired access method Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol and Token Ring protocol on the performance of an integrated ...

A multichannel CSMA MAC protocol for multihop wireless networks

We describe a new carrier–sense multiple access (CSMA) protocol for multihop wireless networks, sometimes also called ad hoc networks. The CSMA protocol divides the available bandwidth into several channels and selects an idle channel randomly for packet transmission. It also employs a notion of “soft” channel reservation as it gives preference to the channel that was used for the last successf...

Optimal Channel Access through Implicit Resource Reservation in Csma Networks

Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) networks are basically wireless LANs. The CSMA is a method that uses carrier sensing scheme in which the station which transmits data can detect collision and takes appropriate steps to have collision-free communication. Many stations in these networks share common resources for successful transmission of data. Resource reservation is one of the well known t...

Improving the IEEE 802.15.4 Slotted CSMA/CA MAC for Time-Critical Events in Wireless Sensor Networks

In beacon-enabled mode, IEEE 802.15.4 is ruled by the slotted CSMA/CA Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. The standard slotted CSMA/CA mechanism does not provide any means of differentiated services to improve the quality of service for timecritical events (such as alarms, time slot reservation, PAN management messages etc.). In this paper, we present and discuss practical service differentia...

Performance Analysis of Reservation MAC Protocols for Ad-hoc Networks

Multimedia and real-time applications require bandwidth guarantees, which may be achieved by resource reservation. However, resource reservation in ad-hoc networks is a very challenging task due to the instability of radio channels, node mobility and lack of coordination between mobile nodes. Proposed reservation MAC protocols like CATA, FPRP, R-CSMA and SRMA/PA have limitations and are suitabl...
